about

Dr. shimon oz

After a long career in the Prime Minister's Office, I wrote a doctorate at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which draws a new picture of fascinating topics such as: the dissolution of the tribe, the consolidation of the Palestinian nationalist tendency, and the grip of Israeli citizenship among the Bedouin in the Negev.

The first part of the doctoral dissertation was published as a chapter in the book "Bedouins in the Negev: Tribalism, Politics and Criticism," and is available for free download at the link below.

I currently work on the other parts of my doctoral dissertation for a book that will be published later this year. Alongside this work, I serve as a research fellow at the Institute for Counterterrorism Policy at the Reichman University of Herzlyia/Israel.

My research areas are divided into two: Sunni Islam, and Bedouin of the Negev – politics and citizenship.

My research approach is based on a deep connection between the academic world, the professional world, and the field – communities and people, past and present.

Throughout 2020, I served as a senior advisor at the Authority for the Development and Settlement of Bedouin in the Negev. In recent years I have been giving lectures and tours to diverse audiences.

My publications

Between two Hegemonies: Fellahin, Bedouin and State in the Negev Dueing the millitary regime

In, "Bedouins in the Negev: Tribalism, Politics and Criticism," Edited by Havatzelet Yahel and Emir Galilee

400 in-depth interviews with political leaders

As part of my research, I conducted over 400 in-depth interviews with a series of political leaders and social entrepreneurs, uncovering previously unknown information about politics and significant social changs among the Bedouin of the Negev.

Comprehensive research work on the Bedouin of the Negev

My research explains how the ethos that the Bedouin in the Negev are a "loyal and disciplined public" was created, and how we moved into a reality of harsh security and criminal manifestations and rising Palestinian nationalism.

20 years of experience in field positions in the Arab sector

I have a deep familiarity with Arab culture and the religion of Islam after working for 20 years in the Prime Minister's Office in a variety of field positions in the Arab sector, and a two-year mission in Jordan.

Advisor to the Director General of the Bedouin Authority

In my work at the Authority for the Development and Settlement of the Bedouin in the Negev, I became deeply familiar with the current reality of the relations and the complex array of interests between the Bedouin and the state.
